Tips for Healthy Summer Travel

If your family is squeezing in one last trip before saying so long to sweet summertime, we’ve got the ultimate list to help make your vacay as healthy and stress-free as possible. Whether you’ll be kicking it back on the beach or wandering around the happiest (and hottest) place on earth, these tips and tricks will make your trip go as smoothly as possible.

1. Plan Ahead
Chances are you’ve had this trip planned for quite some time. However, in the days leading up to your vacation, keep a close eye on the weather to make sure you’re as prepared as can be. From thunderstorms to heat waves, it’s important to make sure you have the proper attire and that any excursions you have planned will remain unaffected.

2. Pack Extra SPF:
No matter where you’re going, if you’ll be outdoors make sure you bring more sunscreen than you think you’ll need. The summer sun is brutal and even a few minutes soaking it up can be extremely dangerous, so make sure you have several bottles of SPF with you at all times. Pro-tip, make sure your sunscreen is NOT on your carry-on if you’re taking a plane since it won’t get through TSA and you’ll need to throw it out.

3. Bring The Bug Spray
If you’re going on a camping trip, this one’s a no-brainer. Unfortunately, mosquito and other insect bites can happen at any destination, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. Bring this repellent with you wherever you go (except on your carry-on since this, like the sunscreen, is a liquid that will be thrown away).

4. Prep Some Snacks
Vacations are often synonymous with indulging which is great in moderation. In situations where you can control the snacks your kids consume, try to make them as healthy as possible. They’ll be plenty of time for s’mores, so during the day try to munch on some fruits, veggies, or protein bars.

5. Drink Plenty of Water
It can be hard to stay on top of your water consumption while traveling, but it’s more important than ever to make sure everyone in your family is staying hydrated, especially while spending time outside in the summer heat. If you’re at a theme park and worried about the high price tag that comes with a bottle of H2O, just ask for a cup of water and you won’t be charged.

6. Rest When You Can
Although vacations are designed for relaxation, it can oftentimes be exhausting when little ones are involved. While it’s tempting to feel like you have to be doing some crazy activity at all hours of the day, it’s okay to take little breaks and rest. If the kids go up to the hotel for a nap, you take one too. If you have things planned for the entire week, try to spend some time relaxing by the pool. Trust us, you’ll all feel better after.
